Academic Career :
After qualifying as a Clinical Psychologist, I was employed by the South African Medical Services (1984-1987) after which I joined the academia (1988-2024). I was employed at four universities namely the University of Port Elizabeth / Nelson Mandela University, Rhodes University, University of the Free State, and the University of Fort Hare.
I retired from the Nelson Mandela University at the end of 2024 as an Emeritus Professor.
Professional Career:
As a practicing Clinical Psychologist and Industrial/Organisational Psychologist, I focus on:
a. Individual Psychotherapy aimed at the treatment of psychological problems (Adolescents and adults older than 15 years);
b. Coaching aimed at the development of personal and occupational competencies (i.e., Personal/Life Coaching, Management Coaching, Leadership Coaching, Executive Coaching, and Team Coaching);
c. Career Counselling aimed at exploration, assessment, and appropriate career choice (Adolescents and adults older than 15 years);
d. Occupational Counselling aimed at the treatment of work-related issues and problems.
I do not render the following services:
• Assessment or treatment of children or adolescents younger than 15 years;
• Psycho-legal or forensic work;
• Assessments aimed at medical boarding, or dismissal due to incapacity.
Practice Orientation and Approach:
My preferred Coaching, Psychotherapeutic, and Counselling Orientation is described as eclectic or integrative.
This means that, firstly, I am able to flexibly employ a range of theoretical frameworks and, secondly, that I adapt my approach to the specific individual’s needs, context and purpose.
Practice Format:
I am comfortable with both the face-to-face and online formats of Coaching, Psychotherapy and Occupational Counselling.
